Why we create a foundation for research in stroke?

The reality of the neurovascular disease in our environment is terrible: is the first cause of death among spanish women and less than 5% of patients receive an appropriate treatment at the time of the stroke. Moreover, 300.000 spanish people live with stroke and they have many doubts and problems that research laboratories do not realise.

FRI-Stroke wants to support an independent and quality research and to encourage those reseachers who are doing efforts in the study of neurovascular diseases. We will also try to offer them all the necessary resources and structures in order to do these diseases disappear. It is the aim of FRI-Stroke to develop innovative research projects that for their nature (risky ideas, very expensive projects...) can not be developed in our system based on public grants.

Currently, research has been mainly focused in the acute phase of stroke without taking into account the research “before” and “after” the stroke: the research in primary prevention (before) and neurreparation (after). These research areas are essential and it is expected that the obtained results could be applied to a wider population (with and without stroke) than the one that is actually profiting from our efforts.

Besides that, public research is mainly based in Universities where basic investigations are performed and in hospitals where acute ischemic stroke patients are admitted. Our research system use to do what it can and not what it want...

That is why in FRI-Stroke we aim to fill in the gaps in the stroke research, and create the adequate conditions, as an independent research structure, not linked to typical situations associated with public research system in or setting.

Part of the research promoted by the FRI-Stroke Foundation wants to be complementary to the existing research at Research Institutes in our environment.

We are convinced that the presence of an organism with independence and neutrality in front of the private industry and institutional agents is needed, as a real observatory of the disease; also, an organism that support patients and acts as a guide for healthcare professionals.
